Equal amounts of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are combined in Pro-Biotic Complex™ for individuals who may require high amounts of these important microorganisms. L. acidophilus is a well-researched, hardy probiotic highly resistant to gastric acid, bile salts, and digestive enzymes. Possessing more than 20 peptidases, it readily breaks down casein, casein-derived polypeptides, and gluten. It hydrolyses bile salts and lowers serum cholesterol levels. L. acidophilus ferments lactose and a variety of other sugars and polysaccharides aiding digestion and lowering the pH of intestinal contents. B. bifidum is normally present in large numbers. Its populations are reduced or absent in allergic infants and elderly adults. B. bifidum suppresses total and antigen-specific IgE production and enhances IgM and IgG responses to select antigens. B. bifidum enhances leukocyte phagocytic activity. It can activate B cells making them more responsive for IgA secretion. B. bifidum enhances IgA response to C. difficile toxin A. Together L. acidophilus and B. bifidum prevent overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast and in a clinical study have been found to support the intestines against antibiotic-associated diarrhea and reduce the incidence of positive testing for C. difficile-associated toxins. This formulation is available in both a high-potency powder containing 10+ billion CFUs per 1/4 teaspoon and a maintenance-dose vegetarian capsule supplying 5+ billion CFUs.
